Old Perithia, the historical village in Corfu
Old Perithia (or Palea Perithia in Greek) is a village which was abandoned from its residents over 60 years ago. The village was built dyring the Byzantine/Venetian era during the 14th century on the northern flanks of Mount Pantokrator in north Corfu.
There are about 130 houses and eight churches, most of them abandoned or ruins, although there are some of them renovated and are being habitable.
All buildings are made of stone and they are typical examples of the building processes and architectural influences of that era.
Old Perithia is referred as a “ghost village” a term which is used mainly to create impressions rather than presenting an objective situation.
In the center of the village, at Foros* someone can find local tavernas to experience some delicious tastes of Corfu after a walk through the alleys of the village.
*Foros, from the Latin forum, word which is used even today in places with Venetian/Italian influences to indicate the central place (i.e. a square) of a village where people are assembled
